Slimbridge Local History Society

Annual Programme of Events 2017

All talks are held in Slimbridge Village Hall and start at 7.30pm.

Make sure you are there early to get a good seat

A combination of the announcement of major drainage works through the centre of the village and the unavailability of two of our original speakers has resulted in a change of date and title for our final presentation of 2017.

The presentation will now be entitled Slimbridge - Alternative Histories and will be held on Thursday (not the usual Wednesday) 2 November at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

We will now feature three short presentations from two local men and one guest.  Barry Goldring will present a dowsers' perspective on their findings on selected sites around the Parish, Steven Tilley will give his views on early Slimbridge as an archaeoastronomer and Chris Bailey will present the findings from the recent detectorists' search of the fields behind Lancelot Court and speculate on their. significance.

We invite you to keep an open mind on these sometimes controversial approaches to history and ask you to join a good-natured question and answer session with all three speakers after they have completed their presentations.

For those wondering what an archaeoastronomer does, he studies the branch of archaeology that deals with the apparent use bu prehistoric civilisations of astronomical techniques to establish the seasons or cycles of the year, especially as evidenced in the construction of megaliths and other ritual structures.

Our trips for 2017 are now complete but we have an exciting line up ready for next year which we will publish shortly.
